“He accosted her in the field. The maiden cried out, but no one was there to save her.”—Deuteronomy 22:27

The Torah speaks of a young girl, accosted and violated in a place where there was no one to rescue her, no one who even heard her voice as she screamed for help.

She is proclaimed innocent, as one who has been murdered.

That is rape, according to Torah: Murdering someone while leaving them alive.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, known as the Tzemach Tzedek, explained that, in a deeper, inner sense, this is every one of us. In our times, the Rebbe elucidated his words:

You Are the Maiden

The maiden is your divine soul, the G‑dpoint within you.

Who is this man that accosts your divine soul and abuses her?

It is the wild, impulsive beast within you. A beast that refuses to acknowledge any meaning or purpose to life. An impulse to destroy yourself. For in each of us is an Esau, “a man of the field,”

Raped and abused by that inner beast, captured by its brute force, your soul cries and screams for rescue. But no one is there to save her. No one even hears her voice. Even you do not hear the screams of your own soul.

Saved by Nothing

No one? But isn’t G‑d there? Doesn’t He hear?

Yes, G‑d is the No One who hears.

In the Hebrew text, “no one” is ayn. Ayn is a nothingness, an absence of structure, of boundaries. That is why we call G‑d the Ayn Sof-- “without end”--for He alone has truly no boundaries.

And it is there that her cry is heard. “Ayn moshia la.” The cry of the most hidden essence of your soul reaches to the most hidden essence of G‑d. To the ayin.

The lower a soul has fallen, the higher her cry reaches. As the desperate screams of a captive fair maiden stir her hero to rescue her at any risk, so the cries of your soul reach to the core of the Infinite Light.

Above, a chord is struck. G‑d says, “This soul, as deeply as she has fallen, she still cries out to Me! She can never be separated from Me! Nothing, not even Esau, the wild man of the field, can sunder her bond with Me!”

When love is awakened Above, love awakens below. Your soul gathers strength and overcomes that beast. Even if just for the moment.

Delight of the Beloved

If you could only truly know the delight of your Beloved Above! His delight in that moment—the moment you struggled to return. His delight in His bond with you that cannot be severed. In just you for who you are.

If you would only truly know, nothing would stop you, ever. You would break free from the clutches of the beast, cross every river, scale every mountain. To find Him. To embrace Him.

And He would reach down towards you, pull you by the hand, break every barrier before you, level every hill and mountain.

Until, once together again, you would discover that you were never truly apart.

Even as Esau accosted you in the field, even as you ignored your own screams, even then, your true, inner desire was only in Him.

Transforming Into Yourself

One who has truly returned, writes Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, is one who can say, “I am a different person. I am not the one who did those things.”

But how is that possible? To live is to invest yourself in life—and to bear the consequences. Each thing you do, each word you speak, each thought you think—you have invested yourself within that deed, that word, that thought. How can you ever divorce your past and claim that wasn’t you?

Because it wasn’t you. You were not you at the time. You were the beast. The inner, essential you was screaming. And no one heard.

That is what it means to return: To hear yourself. To uncover a pure essence within.

And to bring an abandoned, murdered soul back to life.

What makes this idea so painful and difficult is the question of what happens after The One hears? I think of those forsaken hostages, stuck underground for almost two years. Surely they have been crying out. Surely Adonai hears their pleas. And? The faith that it takes to hold on in exceptional, horrific beyond imagination circumstances I can't begin to fathom. (And pray that I never experience.) The one that accosts us may be our own 'wild beast' metaphorically. That is a beast we can work to tame. But after a lifetime of hearing about atrocities, we are faced with the opportunity to see them up close. And we/I ask what happens when The One hears. How do we know we have been heard?

It is real, very very real, and these types of writings always make me cry. My heart becomes full of G DS, Presence and I just cry. There's one note I would like to add; when we sin and then we repent to G D, and the person we may have hurt, and promise to change that certain enemy in our minds to a friend. I feel the heart & pain we felt should never be completely forgotten, that pain didn't feel good and to remember some of it stop our minds & our entire being from repeating the same act again. Yes, we're forgiven by G D, but no one wants to feel the same hurt ever again.

Things often need to get BITTER for Esau, our animal soul, before getting BETTER:

Esau's journey through self-bitterness and hardship often serves as a precursor to divine illumination, which manifests through the emergence of Jacob, our divine soul. Our steadfast perseverance amid negativity ultimately leads to our redemption. This redemption surpasses ordinary understanding and human reasoning; it remains a profound, hidden truth—full of suspense and anticipation—a spiritual cliffhanger patiently waiting to be uncovered from within.

A few more thoughts: How might the divine soul be identified as Jacob and as she, the maiden in Deuteronomy 22:27? In a mystical sense, this paradox can be due to the Breaking of the Vessels, as explained in Kabbalah, which caused disharmony between the feminine and masculine divine principles. In this context, Esau is a spiritual attribute symbolizing the worldly forces that causes this obstruction to continue, while the Shechinah—the feminine divine principle—is now exiled. Jacob, another spiritual attribute, reflects the higher divine soul and now strives to redeem the feminine divine principle, manifested at the lower level of the exiled feminine divine, Rachael, who embodies the Shechinah.

Similar to how our divine soul—the maiden—laments in Deuteronomy 22:27, Rachel also weeps in Jeremiah 31:15, mourning for her children over the exile of the Shechinah.

This mystical framework offers deeper insight into our ongoing spiritual struggles associated with our redemption.

We are usually unaware that we are so often unaware!

We are often unaware of the Divine Orchestration behind the scenes of our daily lives; what may appear trivial or insignificant can carry profound meaning and purpose. This applies just as much to our challenging or negative experiences—never take anything for granted!

How does this relate to my above posts and to “The Fair Maiden’s Cry”? The answer can be better understood through the storylines of the “Mission Impossible” films and classic TV shows, where seemingly minor and disconnected events come together in a masterful, intricate plan to accomplish a greater mission. Similarly, the misery and chaos we observe in our own lives—and in the world at large—are part of a divine design. Out of what may appear as negativity and gloom, a profound and purposeful plan is unfolding—one that leads to the redemption of our souls and the healing of our world, revealing the Divine Master Plan behind what seems vain and woeful.

More commentary

This was written to another correspondent who asked for elaboration:

Yes, the Tzemach Tzedek (who composed this drusha) was saying that all sin is rape. Our only crime is that we don't scream loud enough. But the G_dly soul within us cannot intentionally sin.

However, there is a glimmer of the soul that becomes tied up with the body, called the "nefesh" (as opposed to ruach, neshama, chaya, yechida--the four higher levels of the soul). That aspect of the soul can be duped into sinning. Perhaps the best translation of nefesh is "person"--because that is most of your outer character, the bodily character.

When a person does teshuva, that nefesh is entirely transformed. Her past person is divorced, gone. As the Rambam puts it, she is able to say, "I am not that person who did those things."

What's left of the person are those aspects of the soul that were never tainted by the sin to begin with--along with a new person who was never even there.

My long comment included that point

I said that. I added other things to try to cover more bases, but I did say that, Rabbi. Look again; I said:
"If the maiden is the soul...The soul cries out for relief from its physical incarnation, longing for the life of the spirit, and "there is none to hear"...HaShem is clearly...meant by the No-One in the story. HE is the non-being, the non-created, the Source of all being, known kabbalistically as No-Thing (since He is not a "Thing") and sometimes as No-One. HE hears the soul.... He offers Her relief. He is stronger than anything in the material universe, and He loves Her and he saves Her. if She is brokenhearted and cries out in anguish; the power of the repentant soul's cries are so great that even past sins are transmuted into mitzvot."

My insertion of material about the Shkhinah dilutes the material about the power of the soul that cries out--but I did primarily tell the soul story. The Shkhinah is extra.

Ann's explanation

I enjoyed Ann's explanation. However, I see now that this means I didn't bring out the main point--which is that when the soul cries out from its oppression, she is answered from the core-essence of G_d, that which is called "no one"--because He is entirely beyond all being.

Think of those Popeye cartoons, where Olive Oil is tied and bound by Brutus on the railroad track. Here spontaneous desperate cries bring out the superhuman in her hero. Her cries are what MAKE him into a hero.

So too, with the desperate cries of a soul abused by the facts of life on planet earth--they burst forth from the deep subconscious of the soul and reach to the highest point of the Infinite One Above.

So I'm going to have to rewrite this one again.

My reply to another person who didn't understand this one

You ask for an explanation of the Daily Dose on the Fair Maiden, the rapist, and the Maiden's Beloved.

I will do what I can.

First, on the level of Pshat, the Torah tells us that if a woman says she was raped, but she was in the city and failed to scream, she is not believed. But if she was in the country, it is assumed that she dis scream, but there was none to hear.

Second, I disagree with the use of the word "sin" here. The Torah specifically says that she has done nothing wrong, but that she is in the situation of a man who is robbed by force. However, she is tarnished, damaged, just as the robbed man is diminished.

OK, now forget the Pshat, because now we go into Sod (secret, mystery) or possibly Remes (allegory). Maybe a bit of both.

If the maiden is the soul, then the rapist, Esau, may be the body, keeping the soul imprisoned in an alien and tarnishing and diminishing atmosphere. The soul cries out for relief from its physical incarnation, longing for the life of the spirit, and "there is none to hear"--because here in the physical universe, there can be none. No created being can help her. (The word "soul" is feminine, and so we refer to it as "she" and "her".)

Or the rapist may be our sins. Or it may be the physical universe. I am not totally clear on this detail. Since the rapist's name is Esau, he could represent Jacob's enemy and nemesis, which would imply that the maiden is Jacob--or, rather, Israel, the people, the collective soul of all Jews. That would mean the maiden is the Shkhinah, one of whose identities is precisely that of our collective Jewish "national" soul. Or, if the Shkhinah is the Divine Presence in the physical universe, then the Redemption of the Universe would occur when She is locked in the embrace of Her beloved, The One [see the next paragraph]. Unfortunately, when Israel sins, the Shkhinah is ripped from the arms of her true mate, and taken and raped by the Evil One...I do not recall exactly who that is....possibly the king of the demons, often denoted as Asmodai...possibly The Satan? I am not sure. And the Kadosh Baruch Hu, instead of His True Mate, the Shkhinah, must instead embrace Lilith, Queen of the Demons. This is so unfair. Of course at least one person sins sometimes. It is impossible for us all to be perfect! But that is the sod on the Shkhinah, so today's dose could be about saving the Shkhinah from the evil one. And today's dose offers hope that in spite of the seeming impossibility, HaShem can save the Shkhinah and thereby all the world. If we just cry loudly enough, HaShem can hear. HaShem is clearly Who is meant by the No-One in the story. HE is the non-being, the non-created, the Source of all being, known kabbalistically as No-Thing (since He is not a "Thing") and sometimes as No-One. HE hears the soul or the Shkhinah. He offers Her relief. He is stronger than anything in the material universe, and He loves Her and he saves Her. (HE being commonly called "Gd"--an inadequate name or title for Him, but His True Name, which actually means "causes to exist" is too sacred to write or say.)

When She cries out to Him, HE transforms all Her sins into mitzvot. Or, if She is the Shkhinah, then she is, among other things, the Soul of Israel, and He transforms ALL of our sins into mitzvot. If She is the Divine Presence in the physical universe, then the whole physical universe is redeemed.

It's a clever kabbalistic drash. If it is intended to be only about the single soul, it's like using your left hand to scratch your right ear. All this about the soul has often been said and cited in so many words : Gd alone has the power to save the hopelessly lost soul, and will certainly do so if She is brokenhearted and cries out in anguish; the power of the repentant soul's cries are so great that even past sins are transmuted into mitzvot. "Where the repentant sinner stands, the totally righteous can never stand."

However, if this Dose is intended to cover all the bases, from soul to Shkhinah, it is a compact way of getting it all into one story.
