Eve (Chavah in Hebrew) had just one commandment to keep: not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. Yet she listened to the serpent, who told her to eat the forbidden fruit, and she then invited her husband, Adam, to do the same. It’s a tragic tale that has left many wondering, why did she even listen to the snake?

Before answering this question, it’s interesting to note that the Torah informs us that “the serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild beasts that G‑d had made . . .”1 indicating that the snake used his cunning to entice Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Commentators explain that the arguments of the snake parallel the tactics our own evil inclination uses to entice us to sin. Through exploring the serpent’s subterfuge, we’ll also gain a better understanding of the workings of the evil inclination.

Adding to G‑d's Word

The Talmud2 points out that G‑d commanded Adam and Eve3 not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. Yet, Eve told the serpent4 that G‑d had commanded them not to eat and not to touch the tree.

Although G‑d commanded Adam not to eat from the tree, Adam rationalized that by not touching the tree, they would be prevented from eating from it. So when he repeated the command to Eve, he added that G‑d said not to touch it.5

Hearing Eve’s words, the serpent cunningly pushed her into the tree, showing her that nothing would happen if she touched the tree—ergo, nothing would happen if she ate from it.

This, the Talmud explains, teaches us that whoever adds to the Torah ends up subtracting from it. By erroneously attributing an added prohibition to G‑d, Eve ended up sinning and eating from the forbidden fruit.

The Snake Ate First

Eve was told that when she would eat from the Tree of Knowledge, she would die. Rabbi Don Isaac Abarbanel says that the snake challenged this by demonstrating that he could eat from the tree without any repercussions,6 which led Eve to speculate that the “real”7 reason behind the commandment was, as the snake claimed, that “G‑d knows that as soon as you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like divine beings . . .”8

(Interestingly, according to this explanation, the snake didn’t actually talk. Rather, it was through actions that intimated the message that is attributed to him in Scripture.)

The Appeal of Forbidden Pleasure

Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar, known as the Ohr Hachaim,9 explains that from the opening words of the serpent, we can glimpse some of the tactics he (and the evil inclination) used.

The snake opened by asking, “Did G‑d indeed say, ‘You shall not eat of any of the trees of the garden?’ ”10

Now, what did he mean to say here? Surely, the serpent knew that all other trees were permitted. Rather, he was insinuating that all the fruit paled in comparison to the fruit of this tree, and as long as she did not taste its fruit it would be as if she never ate fruit of any tree at all.

Thus, the evil inclination works to simultaneously decrease one’s desire for the permitted while increasing one’s desire for the forbidden.

“All Is Forbidden”

Alternatively, the snake was suggesting that all the other trees in the Garden were planted from branches of the Tree of Knowledge. As such, he reasoned, they should really be forbidden to eat as well.

This is another way the evil inclination entices people. It attempts to magnify and intensify the challenge of doing mitzvahs, and it then turns around and convinces the person that due to the “insurmountable obstacles,” it is impossible to properly observe the mitzvahs.11

A Matter of Focus

The Rebbe explains that the intent of the evil inclination is to cause a person to do the opposite of what G‑d wants. When the observance of a specific mitzvah takes on particular importance, the evil inclination makes an extra effort to prevent the person from doing that mitzvah. Thus, when Adam and Eve had but one mitzvah, the snake trained all of its power of enticement and seduction to get them to sin. In our own lives, when a specific mitzvah feels particularly difficult, that may be the very mitzvah we are meant to focus on.12

Knowing Better Than G‑d

The Chassidic masters explain that Adam and Eve knew that their life in the Garden was meant to be an ongoing expansion of divine consciousness brought about by “cultivating and guarding.”

By suggesting to Eve that perhaps all the fruits were forbidden, the snake was trying to subtly plant in Eve’s mind the idea that perhaps G‑d meant to deprive them of the fullness of His creation and limit their ability to accomplish His ends. He was not letting them use every available means to make this world His home, in effect sabotaging their efforts. “If He has denied you this fruit, He may as well have denied you all fruit!” Thus, the snake convinced Eve that he knew better than G‑d Himself how to accomplish G‑d's ends.

This is another way the evil inclination usually works. It does not (initially, at least) attempt to convince us to sin, for we as humans are logical thinkers and would refuse. It instead convinces us that transgressing G‑d's express will is a shortcut to accomplishing G‑d's true purpose, and the supposedly sinful act is in fact meritorious.

Now that we know why Eve listened to the snake, we can better understand and be aware of the wily tricks of our own cunning snake, the evil inclination, and conquer it.

There is a hidden or esoteric meaning here in this story. Why do you not share it? The garden, Adam/Eve, the tree, the knowledge, and the snake are symbolizing something more universal. The only thing I see universal in your explanation is the ‘expansion of divine consciousness’.

About one in 10,000 wild apple tree branches grow sweet apples as a recessive trait. The sweet apple seeds will not grow sweet apples, the live branch must be grafted onto a rootstock and a Frankenstein plant produced. Some of us know the labor it takes to produce these "freak of nature" apples and this is the toil that G-d sentenced Adam and Eve to.
Knowledge was grafting and mass-producing the apple tree. In a way, Adam & Eve were expanding on G-ds work and making it their own.
They got a taste of an artificial designer food and became addicted. They spent all day & night tearing up Eden and planting more sweet apples. I heard it was the ruckus they made that angered G-d so much.
This is what Pagans believe the story is really about. The rise of select breeding because G-ods creations are not good enough for Adam & Eve anymore. This leads to the rise of desire, greed, addiction, obsession, theft, and inequity.
Knowledge of all things will make you jaded, you must be selective.

G-d selected trees for the garden that were pleasant to the sight and for food. Whether the two special trees conformed to these criteria is obscure but, in any case, they were planted in centre, the most secure place in garden. G-d referred to the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil by name when commanding Adam not to eat from it before Eve existed. When the serpent spoke about this tree, Eve knew only of the prohibition, unqualified except that it was the one in the centre of the garden: indeed, the serpent had to tell her about the good-and-evil part—apparently Adam didn’t. Did serpent overhear G-d’s commandment to Adam? Serpent wasn’t so-commanded. Maybe serpent wanted the purported wisdom but wanted to find out if the tree was really deadly and tricked Eve into being a “taster,”. She was ill-equipped to decide but reasoned (as G-d did) the fruit was beautiful to see and good for food—but knowingly broke the edict which Adam apparently told her, trusting instead the serpent.

As I read Genesis, what Adam should have told her was "I am not allowed to eat of this tree. You may eat what you like". If the Almighty had given the prohibition to both of them, He would have told that specifically to at least one of them.

Yes, I agree. Nevertheless, it was the serpent who suggested to Eve that the prohibition also applied to her. Did she entirely believe this was true? Somehow she knew that the her first two criteria were identical to G-d’s plant-selection criteria—did she learn this from Adam? (There’s no suggestion the serpent heard this too). Serpent suggested to Eve that G-d prohibited eating the forbidden fruit for a reason (that G-d didn’t want the humans to be as wise as Him) but, as far as we can tell, this must have been the serpent’s fabulation alone. It seems as if Eve’s rationalization in the first two criteria went on to rationalize — at least to her, as the serpent seems to have intended—her third criterion that the purported wisdom was desirable to her—so she ate it before she knew about good and evil, without her ‘eyes opened.’

Why did Adam also eat the forbidden fruit? His testimony was simply that the woman gave it to him—so he ate it. But, as the gardener, would he not recognize it?

I believe that any where at any time, man or women is given a volition no matter how pure the environment there are choices that will be made. Especially if there are choices given. I believe Eve was deceived, where as Adam outright disobeyed the command. We sometimes are prepared for warfare, but not deception, such as Joshua in chapter 9. Hope that helps.

Shalana, we don't know if she forgot it, but we can imagine that she willfully disobeyed G-d's commandment and brought upon us the ability to tell good from evil (which seems to me to be how our consciousness became the means for our communicating with our souls).

So logically, either G-d expected and planned for this stage in human development (by creating the serpent), or disobedience at that time was not so bad after all--and there was love and tolerance on the part of the Creator.

Either way I personally believe that this serpent did us all a whole lot of good and we should not feel so badly about it, because presumably the rest of the world's population would never have begun to understand our ethical ideals and Noah would have found an even better reason for getting drunk and exposing himself.

If they had not both eaten the fruit, the only thing(s) we would all be knowing experientially would be good..We would all be vegetarian, so the issue of what is kosher would never arise. And no plant would be able to poison us (and that includes some those which were now poisonous because of some degradation of our metabolism sent as a result of the Fall).

And we would still be naked and living off the fruit that Gan Eden would still be providing. But, fortunately children are naturally naughty--if they always obeyed their parents we would not be able to learn from making mistakes. So it seems to me that the knowledge of good and evil was inevitable.

Although the serpent is thought to have a wrongful influence, without it we would not need and be unable to write these messages! Of course it might have been that G-d clothed us later on and gave us only good knowledge, but Carolyn, how then can you justify this necessary assumption for an alternative world?

Non-Jew here.. I think this article is describing science. Science could be seen as humanity's efforts to gain Godly knowledge that we're not meant to have, to take a shortcut to God's will. Rabbi Manis Freidman has deeper meaning of this story.

Eden was the staging area for their mission to make the lower world Holy for G-d to dwell with us. The eating of the fruit was the acceptance of the mission.. Of course G*d want them to eat it, he loved dearly he knew what lay ahead for them. It was all part of the plan.
Does it make sense any other way? Why would G*d set them up with that tree if he knew they would eat it sooner or later?

That tree was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which meant knowing good and knowing evil, in the same sense as you know your spouse. It wasn't just knowing the difference.
Once they knew evil, the word "naked" meant something to them, and they knew that's what they were, and that the Almighty and the angels could see their evil nature. If someone had told them before they sinned that they were naked, the reaction would have been like "OK, we're naked, whatever that means, and the leaves on that tree are green. A story works as homiletic instruction only if it makes sense (logic) from which meaning can be understood (wisdom). Integral to this narrative arc is the set-up: the protagonists’ (in this episode, Eve) ordinary world (Eden) is interrupted by (the serpent’s) invitation to a difficult undertaking (discerning opposing compliments); this discernment might be used (with help accepted on condition that wisdom is learned) to return and make the world ordinary again.

Even a robot’s sensors can discern, but alone it’s not enough: wisdom must be gotten from the senses to find a way (G-d’s covenant) through difficulties (temptation, hubris, &c) interrupting the order (that G-d wants kept). Adam can discern (name) different animals, but that alone fails to find him mate (G-d has to do it for him); Eve discerns the K-fruit is beautiful and good to eat (G-d’s very selection criteria), but logic (serpent) alone results in disaster. Getting meaning from simple discernment IS the story’s meaning.

Why did G-d lie? To protect them from the ills of wisdom and knowledge or to tempt them to wisdom and knowledge? Why did G-d create the tree? Why did G-d create the opposing voice? Why can humanity not see the ills of where this very thing, wisdom and knowledge, has taken us? So much temptation, so much repercussion. If Adam and Eve had died from their consumption, not only would humanity not be faced with living as characters in the theatre of human construct but, humanity could still be living in oblivious paradise as free and innocent as all other living creatures. Maybe humanity will come to understand the true meaning of re-creation or, perhaps, the difference between creation and re-creation. Maybe? Time is running out.
Hope all is well, have an awesome day.

This questioning assumes that an alternative to Adam's and Eve's eating from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, was not possible.

It is clear that G-d wanted us to be able to make decisions based on our being conscious of the differences in what we decide to do. So He would have found some other way for us to gain this vital knowledge and understanding, were it not for the serpant and Eve getting us into our present situation.

Logically, I think that this snake was deberately given the ability for the creation of our consciousness within our souls, to know about deciding about what is right or wrong to do. So my question is: did it really deserve to be cursed?.

There is a vague suggestion in the Talmud that the serpent was desirous of Eve, so that most likely causes it to be thought of as being male.

Brilliant, Herr Rav;
behind the initial story there is a permanent strategy that the yetzer ha-rah has pursued undeterred, since the dawn of time.
Other than "fables of Adam & Eve" as a song says ... also tending to demonstrate the non-existence of G-d, therefore another strategic move of the yetzer ha-rah.
Resist, resist, resist

I have a question about "those who add to the Torah subtract from it". Aren't we, in a sense, adding to the commandments when we take those extra steps to avoid transgressing them? (Kosher laws don't include separate refrigerators and stoves, for example). I think some of the "fences" we add are beneficial.
