Naomi’s story is almost inseparable from that of her daughter-in-law Ruth, the ultimate convert, who bound her fate to the Jewish people with the ringing words, “Your people shall be my people, and your G‑d my G‑d.”1 But Ruth did not arrive at that devotion on her own. It was Naomi—not through instruction alone, but by the example of how she carried herself through ruin—who taught her daughter-in-law what it actually means to live as a Jew: not just the laws, but the true Jewish attitude toward loss, generosity, and G‑d. Without Naomi there would have been no Ruth as we know her, ancestress of King David and ultimately of Moshiach.

Naomi’s Background

The name “Naomi” means “my pleasantness,” a name well suited to a descendant of one of the most aristocratic families of Israel. Her grandfather was Nachshon ben Amminadav,2 whose very name became a byword for eagerness to jump in where others fear to tread: while the rest of the Jewish people were panicking at the approach of Pharaoh’s army behind them and the impassable Reed Sea in front of them,3 he entered the water, buoyed by G‑d’s promise that it would split.4 Nachshon’s sister Elisheva married Aaron, first High Priest of Israel, and when they lost two of their children (as Naomi herself later would), Aaron—and, we may assume, his wife—accepted G‑d’s justice with silence.5 This, then, was a family permeated with trust in G‑d, and it was in this spirit that Naomi grew up and later demonstrated the same qualities during her own tribulations.

Naomi’s husband was Elimelech, brother of her father and, like his ancestor Nachshon, a righteous leader.6 In her married life she continued to live up to the meaning of her name, generously and pleasantly providing for the poor.7 Elimelech and Naomi made their home in Bethlehem,8 an important city in the territory of the tribe of Judah. There Naomi bore several children, including two sons named Machlon and Kilion.

The Famine and Its Aftermath

“In the days of the judging of the judges,” the book of Ruth opens, “there was a famine in the land.”9 The Talmud explains that “the judging of the judges” indicates a time when the people themselves passed judgment on their leaders and found them wanting.10

At this point Elimelech decided to leave the Land of Israel altogether. Naomi protested, but was eventually convinced that it was the right thing to do.11 One key concern was that they would be unable to provide for the masses of poor folk who would come to them for donations of food or money12 (and Elimelech knew that his generous wife would nonetheless exert herself to the utmost to support them13). In addition, at a time when people were “judging their judges” and unwilling to follow their guidance, it seems that Elimelech and his family felt unequal to the task of reversing that trend and leading the people to repentance.14

And so they left for Moab, directly across the Dead Sea from their homeland.

Their own fortunes then took a turn for the worse. It started with them losing their livestock and other possessions.15 Elimelech himself lost so much of his dignity that people started calling him just “Naomi’s husband.”16 Soon he died, a loss felt most keenly by his wife,17 who never remarried.18

Their two sons—over Naomi’s protests19—wed Moabite princesses, daughters or descendants of Eglon, king of Moab.20 (It is a matter of some controversy whether they converted to Judaism; for more on this, see footnote 30.) Machlon married Ruth, and Kilion married Orpah.

Years passed, during which Naomi might have expected grandchildren to dote on, but none came.21 Eventually, Naomi lost her two sons as well. Having heard from traveling peddlers22 that the famine had ended, and realizing that her family’s misfortunes were largely due to having left the Holy Land and abandoning the poor in their time of need, she set out to return to her hometown, so poor that she went barefoot.23

On the Road

Ruth and Orpah accompanied Naomi, while she repeatedly tried to convince them to go back home, arguing that there was nothing for them to look forward to with her in the Land of Israel. (The Torah restricts Moabite converts from marrying into the main body of the Jewish people.24 The Oral Torah, as transmitted to Moses, clarifies that this applies only to men, not to women,25 but this was not well known at the time; it was brought to light only later in the story of Ruth, and was still the subject of heated debate in the times of her great-grandson David.26)

Soon enough—after just forty steps27—Orpah gave up. “She kissed her mother-in-law” and left, “while Ruth clung to her.”28 Poor Naomi, bereft of husband, children, and now the last vestige of one of her sons! Yet she steeled herself and focused her attention on Ruth, who evidently was determined to stay with her and fully convert to Judaism. The verses give us Ruth’s lyrical declarations of fealty to Naomi and to her G‑d—“Where you go, I shall go; where you lodge, I shall lodge. Your people are my people, your G‑d my G‑d”29—from which the Talmud deduces Naomi’s challenges to her, checking whether indeed Ruth was prepared to take on the uncompromising requirements that make up the rich tapestry of Jewish life.30 Indeed their dialogue becomes the halachic paradigm for that part of the conversion process.31

As Naomi and Ruth neared Bethlehem, the townsfolk gathered for several reasons, including the funeral of the wife of Boaz,32 leader of the community and of the Jewish people at large.33 Imagine their shock at seeing their old neighbor—but barely recognizable. “Could this really be Naomi?” one asked the other. “She used to travel in style, but now she’s barefoot; she used to wear silks, and now is clad in rags; she used to be well-fed and have color in her cheeks, but now she’s pale from hunger!34 And all that because she left the Holy Land!”35

And how does Naomi respond to all those whispers and curious stares? With a forthright admission of the truth of G‑d’s justice. “If only I had indeed lived up to the meaning of my name!” she tells them.36 “If only I had insisted that we stay here and help the poor!37 But G‑d has testified quite openly that I acted wrongly.38 It wasn’t even just that my husband and children sinned; I was pregnant when we left, but then I miscarried,39 showing that I myself was guilty in G‑d’s eyes too.40 My name ought instead to be Marah (‘embittered,’ but also meaning ‘a shovel’ such as I used to bury my husband and children41). But let me be grateful to G‑d, Who brought me back here alive!”42

The Next Few Months

The lessons on Judaism that Naomi had taught Ruth now came to their aid. The Torah requires the owner of a field to leave various harvest gifts for the poor, including leket, stalks of grain dropped while reaping.43 Ruth proposed to go out each day and glean them, and Naomi—not without misgivings44—agreed.

Divine providence led Ruth to Boaz’s property, where he himself met her and treated her with exceptional kindness.45 He was impressed by her virtues, including her modesty, refinement and industriousness,46 traits that Naomi had inculcated in her. At the end of the first day Ruth was able to bring home enough barley to last her and Naomi for several days,47 plus some bread and roasted grain that Boaz had given her (the latter usually a treat enjoyed only by the well-to-do).48

Naomi, ever vigilant about her daughter-in-law’s integration into Jewish society, had to wonder how Ruth had brought back so much. Had she gotten a side job working for the landowner?49 Or did he (or someone else there50) have improper designs on her?51 Ruth reassured her that Boaz had acted out of entirely unselfish motives—though she also added that Boaz had dropped some possible hints at his interest in matrimony with her.52

Naomi replied with a heartfelt blessing to G‑d and to Boaz as His messenger. (Later, when Boaz married Ruth, that blessing by the righteous Naomi was instrumental in G‑d granting them a son after a long period of childlessness.53) She then informed Ruth that Boaz was their relative, along with her observation that indeed Boaz might well have intended the implications that Ruth had discerned in his words, and the hope that he would follow up by proposing marriage to her—which would be more than just an ordinary courtship: he would thereby perpetuate the name of her deceased husband, following the Torah principle of yibbum (levirate marriage).54 As their close relative, he would also have the right and the duty to be the family’s “redeemer”—to buy the properties that had formerly belonged to Naomi’s and Ruth’s husbands, thereby keeping them in the family.55

Meanwhile, Naomi still had work to do with her eager pupil, reinforcing her in her observance of the Jewish norms of modesty that she might not have fully internalized yet,56 and teaching her the nuances of the Hebrew language.57 The latter meant more than just drills on syntax and grammar: it would take a mental shift for Ruth to leave behind the depravity of her native Moab, as expressed in its language,58 and instead immerse herself fully in the holiness that Hebrew expresses in its very vocabulary.59

Sending Ruth to the Granary

Several months had passed, harvest season was over, and still Boaz had made no move to propose to Ruth. So Naomi decided that bold and unconventional action was needed: Ruth herself would confront Boaz privately, in his granary (where he would be spending the night), and remind him of his obligation to her. If until now Naomi had been training Ruth in the ways of the Jewish woman’s modesty and reserve, now it was time for her to temporarily set those aside; that departure from her usual demeanor might itself spur Boaz to action.60

First she explained to Ruth the necessity of this step, and reassured her that it would not matter to Naomi if she were left alone, so long as she could see Ruth happily married.61

“Bathe, anoint, and dress yourself,” the verse quotes Naomi as saying. The Midrash62 expands on this, showing how these were also instructions to Ruth to prepare herself spiritually. Naomi was telling Ruth to purify herself of any last vestige of her pagan past (such as any previously overlooked trinkets with idolatrous images63); to armor herself with righteousness and good deeds (to keep both physical and moral danger at bay); and to wear her Shabbat finery.64 “My merits will go along with you,” said Naomi, “and if you can’t find any women to walk with you, I will do so.”65

Whatever misgivings or concerns Ruth might have had,66 she loyally followed her mother-in-law’s instructions.

The upshot was that Boaz informed Ruth that there was another, closer, relative67 who would have to be consulted first to see if he would want to marry Ruth and be the family’s “redeemer.” Boaz promised Ruth that he would see to that in the morning, and that if that closer relative refused, Boaz himself would step into the role. Early in the morning she arrived back home, her heart full of hope and her shawl full of grain that Boaz had given her to tide herself and Naomi over for the coming morning.68 Naomi was rather surprised to see Ruth—she had expected that Boaz would propose marriage then and there, such that Ruth would remain in his house to prepare for the wedding69—but Ruth clarified the situation, adding that the food was actually primarily for Naomi.70 The latter reassured her that Boaz would be a man of his word, and urged Ruth to remain at home and await further developments.71

Naomi’s Vindication

Sure enough, that very morning Boaz, in the presence of the Sanhedrin, met with his relative. After laying out the entire story, including the proposed marriage to Ruth, the latter demurred on various grounds, clearing the way for Boaz and Ruth’s wedding. The crowd there warmly blessed the couple, and they were ready to embark on a new phase of their life—Boaz at eighty years old,72 Ruth at forty.73

Sadly, the Midrash relates that Boaz passed away that very night, leaving Ruth once again a widow,74 but pregnant with their child. Once he was born, it took Naomi some time to adjust and to not have the baby remind her of her own sad past.75 Here her neighbors stepped in to comfort her, pointing out, among many other things, that this child, born to her dear daughter-in-law Ruth, who had loyally stayed with her through thick and thin, would preserve the memory of her son Machlon.76 Naomi became such a doting grandmother to the child that people began thinking of him as hers!77 So that after all of the twists and turns of her life, Naomi was able to enjoy true Jewish nachas.

The boy, named Oved, grew up to be a righteous man like his father and earlier ancestors,78 and eventually became the grandfather of King David, and through him of the Jewish monarchy and the soon-to-be-revealed Moshiach.

It would have been easy for Naomi to see herself only as a victim—of famine, of exile, of the deaths of her husband and both her sons. Instead, standing before the women of Bethlehem, she took responsibility even for her own miscarriage as a sign that she, too, had a share in what had gone wrong. That same unflinching honesty is what let her rebuild: she did not wait for rescue, but quietly and deliberately guided Ruth toward Boaz, step by step, never losing faith that G‑d's kindness was still at work even in her emptiest years. Naomi’s legacy is a reminder that pleasantness and generosity are not undone by hardship—and that the quiet, patient work of one grieving woman could still, generations later, produce a king.

Whether Ruth and Orpah converted to Judaism before marrying Naomi’s sons is widely disputed. Some maintain that Machlon and Kilyon would not have married non-Jewish women, a serious Torah prohibition, and so they must have had them convert at least pro forma (Ibn Ezra, Ruth 1:2; Zohar Chadash); this also fits with the fact that later Boaz weds Ruth “to establish the name of the deceased (Machlon) upon his inheritance” (Ruth 4:10), which would be meaningless had her marriage to Machlon been unrecognized by Jewish law. Other sources (including Ruth Rabbah 1:4 and 2:9) indicate that in fact they had not converted, which would explain why Naomi tries to convince them to return to their old lifestyle, and how we can derive the laws of conversion from her dialogue with Ruth (as in the text). R. Moshe Shternbuch (Moadim U’Zemanim 4:316) first suggests that they were converted as children, in which case they could decide, upon reaching the age of majority, to retroactively annul that conversion (see also the present writer’s note on this topic in Haoros Ubeurim Oholei Torah, issue 982, p. 76), though he prefers the explanation that their conversion, done for the sake of marriage, was halachically questionable. (Note that for practical guidance in this area, an expert Orthodox rabbi must be consulted.)
